Answer
As a general rule, health insurance is compulsory for everyone living in Switzerland. You must have taken out basic health insurance cover no later than three months after entering the country. The payment of contributions (premiums) to the compulsory health insurance scheme is not the responsibility of your employer.
Premium rates are independent of income, but vary depending on age, place of residence and health insurance company. With the help of the premium calculator you can find out the health insurance premiums applicable in your place of residence and choose freely from the list of approved health insurers.
